2/5/2009: Ultimate Fakebook and The Republic Tigers at The Uptown in Kansas City, MO
Ultimate Fakebook reunion! I know what you're thinking ... was it as awesome as it sounds? The answer is no, it was way more awesome. Saw lots of friends, had a few drinks, and lots of rock & roll ... it was pretty much like every UFB show I've ever been to, only this one had a confetti machine (thanks to the Flaming Lips). Also, The Republic Tigers played a badass Blondie cover ... check em out if you haven't already.

7/19/2008: The Foo Fighters at Kemper Arena in Kansas City, MO
I’m not the biggest big venue fan and this was at Kemper (which is a big venue), but it’s the only way you get to see bands like The Foo Fighters, so I did what had to be done. Our tailgate extravaganza caused us to miss most of the Supergrass set, which I would’ve liked to see, but it didn’t bother me too much. The Foo Fighters set pretty much rocked (as expected) and I had a great time. The end.

7/3/2008: The Roots at Voodoo in Kansas City, MO
The Roots are one of my favorite bands and they put on a great live show. A good description, I think, is jazz rap ... and it's all kinds of fun (including only the kind of fun that can be had with a sousaphone). If you want good hip-hop, The Roots are where it's at. The only down side to the night was that Voodoo is attached to Harrah's Casino, which is where we went after the show and where I lost every bet I made.

Ludo is always a fun show and this was no exception.

12/8/2007: Slick Rhodes (a.k.a. Arthur Dodge) at Mae's in Manhattan, KS
A parade of holiday hits. It was like christmas for my ears.

10/31/2007: Pomeroy at The Kathouse in Manhattan, KS
This show was on Halloween so everyone had costumes and fun wasn’t hard to come by. The Effects and The Ruckus were the opening bands and all three put on a good show.

9/22/2007: Aggiefest

Manhattan's annual music festival struck again. This year's lineup included Addictive Behavior, The Appleseed Cast, Dead Girls Ruin Everything, The DeWayn Brothers, Dropjaw, Jonathan, The Ruckus, Shady Lane String Band, and many others. I had a good time.

9/11/2007: Against Me! at The Granada in Lawrence, KS
My face was still recovering from an unfortunate event that took place a few days earlier (on my birthday) so I wasn’t able to jump around up front, but I enjoyed myself in the back. I’ve never been to a bad Against Me show.

8/4/2007: O'Phil at Kirbys in Wichita, KS

It had been a long time since I had the chance to see an O’Phil show. The band has gone separate ways but they get together every so often and play a reunion show and good times are had by all. Kirby’s is not the largest venue so it was a little crowded, but fun.

5/8/2007: Sage Francis at Amoeba Music in San Francisco
Amoeba Music is a record store on Haight St a few blocks down from Ashbury St. The area is famous for its role as a center of the 1960’s hippie movement. It’s a pretty interesting neighborhood (very eclectic) and there’s definitely still a bit of the hippie vibe floating around. Anyway, I enjoy the lyrical styling of Sage Francis so I was happy we were in the same place at the same time. Also, this was a free show so that made it even better.

4/14/2006: Anti-Flag and The Casualties at the 9:30 Club in Washington D.C.
This was my first time in DC so finding the venue from the subway was a little challenging.  I ended up following some kids who looked like they might be headed towards the show, luckily they were. The music was good and everyone seemed to be having a good time.

10/21/2006: Aggiefest
There were over 70 bands and 18 different venues in Aggieville starting at 10am and continuing until 2am.  The schedule had to be slightly modified to move some bands playing outdoors indoors due to the weather, but everything went smoothly.  I started the day at Pizza Hut for lunch at about 12:30pm and spent the rest of the day rocking and rolling around the ville ending up at PJ’s for The Ruckus at 12:00am and Ruskabank at 1:00am.  Most of my Aggiefest highlights where from bands playing at untraditional venues like D.P.H and Addictive Behavior at S.O.S., and 12th Street Squeeze and Jonathan at The Dusty Bookshelf.  However, the best time I had was dancing at PJ’s during the Ruskabank show.  Ska may be dead but you wouldn’t know it from the crowd at PJ’s.  I think it is safe to say Aggiefest 2006 was a success.  Everyone I ran into was having a good time and the music was great.  I can’t wait for next year.

8/18/2004: MU330 w. Ruskabank at the Bottleneck in Lawrence.
I haven't been updating this log for awhile because I lost interest, but this was a great show so I feel like I should write something about it. There are three reasons this was such a great show. The first reason is I haven't seen MU330 something like 5 years because they stopped coming around for some reason. The second reason is MU330 is an amazing band and Ruskabank playing with them just made the show that much better. The third reason is ska is cool and skanking is good times. So there you have it. If you missed this show I feel bad for you because it was fun.

6/26/2004: I haven't written in awhile because I'm lazy.
However, I have been to some good shows since we last "spoke". Of course, The Bouncing Souls were great. They played with The Unseen, Avail, and someone else at the Granada in Lawrence. I also went to see Pomeroy, Ten Till Blue, and Gang of Hours play a free show outside at the K-State Union. There were some sound problems during Ten Till Blue's set, but it wasn't bad. If you've never seen Gang of Hours, I would highly recommend it, they are amazing. Pomeroy played last and put on a great show. If you've never heard David freestyle, then you need to check it out because it's some of the best I've heard. I'm pretty sure I'm forgetting about some shows I saw at PJ's but it's not going to bother me too much.

4/9/2004: Ruskabank w. The U.N.I.T., In Transit at PJ's in Manhattan
Of course this show was fun because it was Ruskabank. I don't know if I've ever had a bad time listening to Ruskabank. They played on PJ's new stage which turned out pretty good. Now the speakers are spread out a little and if you happen to be standing in the back you can see a little better. I only heard In Transit's last song but it didn't suck and The U.N.I.T.'s jazzy/hip-hop mix was good as well. To be honest though, Ruskabank is who I went to hear, I got my skanking fix and all went well. I'm writing this ten days after the show because I'm lazy so that's all I can think to write. Peace out!

4/3/2004: The Primetime Heroes, Clap, and The Hips at Gumby's in Manhattan.
The good thing about going to a show at Gumby's is that there is no cover and if you're hungry you can get some tasty pizza. Anyway, I missed hearing The Hips because I got there late, but The Clap and The Primetime Heroes rocked out. If you haven't heard these two bands and you like punk/popish music then you need to hear them because they're awesome. I always have a good time at their shows and you will too if you go … so you should go. Just in case you are reading this and you don't know that the Bouncing Souls are playing April 22 at the Granada in Lawrence, they are and I expect to see you there.

4/2/2004: Dead Girls Ruin Everything and The Business Machines at PJ's in Manhattan.
This was a great show. Not too many people were there but the music was good. The Business Machines are a punk band from L.A. and they put on a great show. This was the first time I heard them and they kicked ass so I bought their CD "Almost Automatic" which also kicked ass. Dead Girls Ruin Everything played last and played a good set. That is all I feel like writing.

3/6/2004: Ultimate Fakebook, Motion City Soundtrack, and Schatzi at The Bottleneck in Lawrence.
This was Fakebook's last show and needless to say it was awesome. All the true fans that could make it were there and everyone had a good time. Schatzi played first and we got there a little late so I only caught the last part of their set but I liked what I heard. Hopefully they will come around again sometime soon so I can check out a full set. Motion City Soundtrack played next and laid down the rock. It was good. Fakebook played last and good times were had by all. Stephen from the Descendents took the stage for a couple of songs and that of course was cool as hell. During the last few songs everyone that could fit, including myself, got on stage and rocked out. It was an amazing show. I had a blast. After the show everyone headed over to Fakebook's house for the after party and good times were extended into the wee hours of the morning.

3/4/2004: Ultimate Fakebook, Purify, and another band at Shotz in Manhattan.
This was Fakebook's last show in Manhattan so it was a sad day but good times were had. Purify played first to a pretty small crowd but they played well and got things off to a good start. The band whose name I can't recall played next and I liked them a lot, which is why I'm upset I can't remember their name. More people started showing up as the night progressed and by the time Fakebook played there were quite a few people there. Fakebook played last and everyone sang and danced and had a good time. Kliph from the Flaming Lips took over drums for a couple of songs with Fakebook and the rock continued until last call when I went home and went to bed.

2/5/2004: Jonathan and Purify at PJs in Manhattan.
It was fan appreciation night in the land of Purify. That means free beer for anyone who wanted it and that means good times. Not very many people came out because it was a Wednesday and cold, but the people that were there seemed to be having a good time. Jonathan got things started and the one man show rocked and it rolled. Then Purify played and there were good times had by all. The end.

1/31/2004: Purify at some house party I went to in Manhattan.
The weather sucked, it was icy and cold, and so I wasn't expecting the party to be much. I am happy to say I was wrong. A lot of people turned out and Purify rocked out. Mikey Fresh plays a mean guitar; he's probably one of the best guitar players I've heard in a while. If you've never seen Purify I recommend you check them out.

1/30/2004: Ultimate Fakebook, Dead Girls Ruin Everything, and Addictive Behavior at PJ's in Manhattan.
The only problem with this show was that at around midnight, about one song into Fakebook's set, the cops came and kicked everyone under 18 out. This was supposed to be an all ages show so everyone including the band was pretty upset. The cops said that everyone under 18 were supposed to be out by 8:00. I thought that was strange because I've been to quite a few all age shows in bars that lasted past 8:00. Anyway, Fakebook said they would play another all ages show in Manhattan to make up for this one. Addictive Behavior was the first band that played. If you haven't seen them you need to go to a show sometime. They kick ass! There are four members, I think they're all in high school, and in my opinion they're better than a lot of bands that have been around longer. Dead Girls Ruin Everything played next in what I think was their first official show. They also kicked ass. Ultimate Fakebook played last and after the incident with the cops it was exactly what most people expect from a Fakebook show … crazy rock and roll good times!

1/16/2004: Ruskabank, O'Phil, B-Team, and Special Disaster Team at the Granada in Lawrence.
Ruskabank and O'Phil always put on a good show and the other two bands didn't suck. There was a respectable turnout, not to many people but that was ok because I had room to skank. This was the first time I've seen Special Disaster Team (from Oklahoma I think) and they did a pretty good job. There are not too many opportunities to get your skank on nowadays so if you like ska you should have been there.

I enjoy improv of all types so I've put together a playlist of the best (what appears to be legit) freestyle hip-hop I've seen on YouTube. Take a look ... if you've seen better, send it my way.

Here's a list of some bands I've seen (not all on purpose):
